A swim in the Southern Ocean, a hot spa, and a long feast.

Midwinter Merriment at Macca

The weather deities (and a helpful ridge of high pressure above the island) smiled upon the Macca team on Midwinter Day.

We started the day with near perfect weather conditions for a calm, but chilly swim in the Southern Ocean and a soak in the spa, and ended the celebrations with a lovely exchange of handmade gifts and a long feast into the evening.

While the kitchen was the engine-room of the celebration, it was a wonderful team effort that brought it all together.

Each team member made their unique contribution: ironing the table cloths, polishing the silver, peeling the prawns, washing the perpetual stack of dishes in the kitchen, hanging the flags, and carting the delicious brunch to the post office.

Then there were others who used their ingenious talents to transform the bar into a cocktail lounge, or to make the photo booth, or to create the menu and place cards. Such creativity! There were many small touches, like the perfectly folded serviettes, the handpicked table greenery and the specially made home brew… and then the 'piece de resistance', the almost-to-scale albatross candelabra in the centre of the table.

A huge team effort, and a super-talented chef, made for a memorable Midwinter celebration at Macca.

And as the north westerly winds blew back in over Macca, it was a weekend of welcome rest and recovery.

And now…? Bring on the return of the light!
