This week at Macca, we're all about getting to know our ‘Senior’ Station Sparkie Scotty.

5-minutes with 2023 Macca wintering ‘Senior’ Sparkie Scotty

Name: Scott McCartney

Nicknames: Scotty (the Shang)

Where are you from: NSW South Coast

Previous seasons?

Casey 2012, Davis 2013, Mawson 2018, Macca 2020

Job title: Senior Station Sparky (as in age)

Describe your role in 2 sentences:

To ensure electrons are there for use when needed…

But seriously, to carry out new installation work, electrical safety compliance testing and repairs as they arise.

What did you do before you joined the AAD?

I was a supervisor/ scheduling officer for an engineering company responsible primarily for breakdowns and maintenance of crushing and batching plants for various companies.

In between seasons I have worked for a government contractor carrying out thermal imaging inspections/reports for insurance compliance and for myself doing little installs and repairs in my local community.

What is your favourite part of your job here at Macca?

Working with the other trades, just because you are here in one role doesn’t mean that’s what you will be doing every day.

If you were not an Electrician, what would be your dream job?

Probably working on/restoring classic cars?

How does this season at Macca compare to your previous seasons down south?

I take each season as they come, but compared to my last season here? As always, the weather on Macca is a challenge and is proving that again, but the wildlife is off the charts.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Back home I’m in a car club so tinkering with cars consumes a lot of my downtime.

Down here I’ve been known to take the odd photo or be in front of the dart board practicing.

What song sums up your Macca experience so far?

Not sure on that one, Pink Floyd’s Wish you were here??

What actor would play you in a film version of our 76th ANARE season here at Macca?

Don’t know, someone with a good head of hair ha-ha.

What is your favourite spot here at Macca and why?

Probably Green Gorge, for the view and photo ops and The Nuggets for the same reason.

Favourite piece of Australian Antarctic Division kit?

This would usually be my Carhart, but it hasn’t seen much action this season so I will just go with my beanie oh and maybe the merino gloves.

What is your favourite book / movie (or both) and why?

Movie – don’t really have one, I like thrillers.

Book – not a big reader, currently reading Dave Grohl’s The Storyteller.

What is your typical ‘Slushy FM’ genre? Do you have a particular favourite?

I would say Grunge moving into heavy rock/metal.

Describe your Macca experience with: a sight, a smell, a sound, a feeling and a taste.

Sight – misty

Smell – rotting kelp

Sound – farting/sneezing elephant seals

Feeling – wind swept

Taste – fruit toast and coffee
