An expeditioner's ice obsession is revealed
As a first-time expeditioner here to Antarctica, I am constantly taken aback by the ever-varied and changing presence of the ice around us.
It comes in many shapes and sizes, textures and patterns, places and forms that it’s quite difficult to use words to describe.
Even looking at the same piece of ice at a different time seems to give it an alternate appearance, almost like it has its own personality.
Combined with the rapidly changing astronomical conditions, the ice, the sun and the moon very much seem to speak a language and have customs here uniquely their own.
The following pictures try to capture this, because sometimes words are not enough.
