The Australian Government is committed to protecting the Antarctic environment. We work to continually improve our environmental stewardship and reduce the impacts of our operations.

Details of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process:

In line with Australia’s obligations under the Antarctic Treaty system and with the Antarctic Treaty (Environment Protection) Act 1980, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) has assessed the potential environmental impacts of operating the following, through Initial Environmental Evaluations (IEE's):

  • Antarctic research stations at Casey, Davis and Mawson
  • the research and supply vessel RSV Nuyina
  • aircraft and aviation facilities.

The Initial Environmental Evaluations, Notices of Authorisation and associated statutory documents for these operational activities are available:

All Australian Initial Environmental Evaluations are also available through the Electronic Information Exchange System on the website of the Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty.

In addition, some previous environmental reports and plans required under Australian Initial Environmental Evaluations are available through the Australian Antarctic Data Centre.
