Mountaineering at Mawson station

The ascent of Fang Peak

The past weekend saw another peak conquered by the Mawson Mountaineering Club – Fang Peak, which is 1032m. Led by our ever enthusiastic leader Mark, we scrambled our way up to the base of the massif and then roped up for the climb to the peak, all the while basking in the beautiful sunshine of the Mawson summer.

Once at the peak we posed for a photo which was to be taken from the ground by a fellow non-climbing member of the team, however due to the elevation it was hard to determine where exactly the photo was to be taken from (or which direction to face). After some questionable directions which felt more out of a chapter from the fabled tale of the accent of Rumdoodle (those of you who have read this classic will understand that it was much like finding camp 1). Some of our notable favourites were:

“We are on the western ridge“

“I’m on a snow patch, next to a large rock“

“If you look at the sun – I am 45 degrees between that and the red Hägglunds”

But eventually we got there and once satisfied with the proof of an ascent photo we “gracefully“ abseiled our way back down to the hut and we celebrated another successful climb at Fang Hut with a hot cup of tea and enough cheese to put us to sleep.

PS: See the photos for the Where’s Wally of the western ridge - note the vehicles and hut for scale.
