Mawson has its very own Aussie hip hop loving dieso

Meet an expeditioner: Tom (dieso)

Name: Tom Lievense

Nicknames: Thom

From: Albany, Western Australia.

Previous seasons? Nope

Job title: Dieso

Describe your role in two sentences: Moving broken things to warm places to make them unbroken things.

What did you do before you joined the AAD? Worked in-between the marine and mining industries in W.A. as a diesel mechanic.

What is your favourite part of your job here at Mawson? Keeping the powerhouse in tiptop shape.

If you were not a Dieso what would be your dream job? Something to do with mechatronics, bridging the gap between software and hardware.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Short answer ‘tinkering’ long answer. Carrying out projects that I’ve come up with anywhere from metalwork, woodwork, electronic gadgets or improvements for the workplace.

What song sums up your Mawson experience so far?

LITTLE BIG – SKIBIDI (official music video) - YouTube

What actor would play you in a film version of our 75th ANARE season here at Mawson? Current Micky Rourke.

What is your favourite hut for field trips and why? The little gem nestled 5km from station that is ‘Beche’. Absolute cracker of a spot, warm and cosy with plenty of space.

Favourite piece of Australian Antarctic Division kit? My Carhartt jacket for sure!

What is your favourite book / movie (or both) and why? My favourite recent book that comes to mind would have to be Altered Carbon (Biased opinion due to how much I love the Netflix show).

What is your typical 'Slushy FM' genre? Do you have a particular favourite? Aussie hip hop, just ask anyone on station.

Describe your Mawson experience with: a sight, a smell, a sound, a feeling and a taste.

The sight of the wind turbine coming back to station from a trip no matter the direction.

Fresh crisp air no matter how cold the air might be on the day.

The fire alarm deafening us during station fire drills (huge hit with the whole team).

The feeling of accomplishment returning from Kloa (maybe it was the feeling of the first shower in 11 days…… same same).

The taste of Donna's amazing food day in, day out, week in, week out. We really are lucky to have such an amazing chef looking after us.
