The Rebel Island

Macquarie Island is the ultimate rebel island…no trees just a constant slap of wind and rain.

Imagine a place where you can’t climb a tree, build a treehouse or even enjoy a bush hammock.

But who needs trees when you have an open-air park full of the world's most dense congregations of wildlife, including millions of seabirds, massive marine mammal colonies and unique sub-Antarctic mega herbs!!

Magpies warbling in the morning?  Not here…just elephant seal’s snorting, belching and farting like an old diesel engine on a cold winter’s morning.

Koalas grunting and causing chaos? Not here…just gentoo’s conducting daily neighbourhood meetings at maximum volume.

Kookaburras laughing at you from a distance? Not here…just king penguins in their tuxedo’s constantly judging you from afar.

Wombats blocking your road? Not here…just fur seals lying around like oversized grumpy bean bags.

Life on Macquarie island isn’t for everybody. The weather is rude, the wildlife is loud, and the trees just didn’t bloody show up! But somehow between the chaos, the laughs and the endless wildlife encounters, this little island definitely has a way of stealing your heart. So, while the rest of Australia is worrying about traffic jams, swooping magpies and mowing the lawns, we’re just out here trying not to get blown into the Southern Ocean. Ha ha.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way!
