An ode to the slushy
In truth, the role of slushy extends well beyond the popular understanding of kitchenhand.
Emotional support. The slushy brings a stable emotional environment to the kitchen, bringing order to the emotional chaos that often surrounds the chef. Indeed the role of the slushy is to manage, guide and help regulate these 'creative types' which is no small undertaking.
The slushy often goes unrecognized and unrewarded in their role. Roles such as creating the emotional bridge between chef and community- a bridge which is critical, and in constant need of repair.
If the chef is the high-flying eagle, the slushy is the wind beneath his wings. With a few soothing words, a rub on the back, an encouraging smile - this is often what's required to sooth the beleaguered chef and it's the slushy who provides this, not because they're asked to but because when a slushy sees a need, they feel a duty to fulfill it.
"Ask not what we can do for ourselves, but what we can do for our kitchen". The slushy is the very embodiment of this mantra, going quietly about their duties while also meeting the chefs every demand. Quiet anunassuming they accept orders without complaint as they make the chef another drink or provide that much-needed foot-massage. There’s nothing a slushy won’t do for the chef - and nothing the chef won’t ask of a slushy. The perfect combination!
And slushies will continue to hold up their end. Like Knights of the Watch, they walk the walls to keep the rest of us safe as they maintain the peace and safeguard the community from the dog-eat-dog realities of kitchen life.
