It’s important to think about crocodiles, marine iguanas and sunfish often.

Collective Wisdom

Living in a remote community like Macca has its ups and downs, but one of the best parts is the people. You are surrounded by a diverse, quirky, and all-round amazing group, people you learn from, lean on, and get to share the magic of the island with.

One of the biggest highlights of this year for me has been exactly that - the community. Even though there’s a big mix of ages, backgrounds, and life experiences, we have all learnt from each other. Having such a wide and varied inner circle is not something you always get in everyday life, and it makes being here pretty neat.

As the youngest on station, I love learning from this community, shaped by lives different from my own and so I asked everyone to share a piece of life advice with me.

Here is the wisdom the summer 78th shared with me:

There is no better time to start than right now - Dos

It’s alright to glance in the rear vision mirror but don’t stare at it - Dunc

Never pass on a chance to make things better - Scott

Get busy living or get busy dying - Ryan

In a world where you can be anything, be kind- anon

Become a wildlife biologist - Bree

It’s important to think about crocodiles and marine iguanas and sunfish often - Jas

It’s better for people to think you’re stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt - Rhys

Be bothered - Gemma

Don’t take things too seriously (and buy some bitcoin )- Keith

Everybody is someone else’s weirdo - Anne

Live life without regrets - Terry

Don’t accept criticism from someone you wouldn’t go to for advice - Dom

If you leave it to the last minute, it will only take a minute - Curly

Do something every day that brings you joy, fills your soul and makes you smile – Vanessa

Do better - Matt

A jack of all trades, but a master of none, yet still better than the master of one – Conrad

An apple a day keeps the doctor away - Soph

In all things compassion - Karen

There is no such thing as a normal life, there is just life - Rob

You grow rich when you seek new experiences not material things - Karim

Don’t use permanent marker - Sam

If cauliflower can become pizza, you can be anything - Sharon

It turns out if you put a bunch of very different people on a remote station, you end up with a surprisingly solid (and occasionally questionable) guide to life.

Thanks 78th xx
