Meet Scott, our project sparky

5 Minutues with Scott our project sparky

Name: Scott McCartney

Nicknames: Scotty

Where are you From: NSW South Coast

Previous seasons? Casey 2012, Davis 2013 and Mawson 2018

Job title: Projects sparky

Describe your role in two sentences: To try and bring the buildings at Macca up to standard, electrically anyway. Oh and brew beer.

What did you do before you joined the AAD? I was a supervisor for a mining maintenance engineering company and, between getting back from Mawson and coming to Macca, travelled the country upgrading switchboards.

What is your favourite part of your job here at Macca? Sampling my latest brew.

If you were not an electrician, what would be your dream job? Anything not to do with electricity, probably working on/restoring classic cars?

How does this season at Macca compare to your previous seasons down south? I take each season as they come. The weather is a bit of a challenge, but the wildlife is off the charts.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I’ve been known to take the odd photo and the brewery keeps me busy too.

What song sums up your Macca experience so far? Not sure on that one, Pink Floyd's Wish you were here??

What actor would play you in a film version of our 73st ANARE season here at Macca? That bloke from GOT?... I’m hopeless with actors' names.

What is your favourite spot here at Macca and why?

I seem to gravitate towards the Ham shack a fair bit, for afternoon photo ops. As for the field, probably Green Gorge.

Favourite piece of Australian Antarctic Division kit? This is usually the Carhart, but it hasn’t seen much action this season so I will just go with my beanie, oh and maybe the merino gloves too!

What is your favourite book / movie (or both) and why?

Movie – Don’t really have one but I like thrillers.

Book - ...

What is your typical 'Slushy FM' genre? Do you have a particular favourite? Anything that makes Arvid frown, it’s becoming more challenging but I still seem to be able to find something.

Describe your Macca experience with: a sight, a smell, a sound, a feeling and a taste.
Sight – mist

Smell – rotting kelp

Sound – farting/sneezing elephant seals

Feeling – wind swept

Taste – home brew

Do you have a favourite quote that you’d like to leave us with?

Don’t know if it’s a favourite, but it seems to be a common consensus that you will be fit when you leave Macca.
