Expeditioners at Davis embrace Star Wars Day, May the 4th.

NOT SO LONG AGO ON A STATION FAR, FAR AWAY...

Set to a backdrop reminiscent of the ice planet Hoth, the expeditioners of Davis station have embraced May the 4th. What started as a clever pun in the 70’s has now been widely accepted as international Star Wars Day. And while May the 4th is celebrated back in Australia in certain circles, it seems to have found another gear on Australia’s Antarctic Stations. This being my second season with the program, it has become quite apparent May the 4th is a cornerstone of the winter social calendar. The dedication and ingenuity in pulling together such excellent costumes with limited resources and no shops really is a testament to all involved. The day started with an excellent Star Wars themed brunch prepared by Chef John and delicious Star Wars themed cookies prepared by our supply officer Ash and Station Leader Jenny. A very quick photo outside, followed by all station voting on the best Star Wars costume. Although it was fiercely contested, congratulations to Gavin from the Bureau of Meteorology for taking first place. I feel confident in saying that Gavin would have to be the best looking X-wing pilot on this continent. The afternoon was spent watching four Star Wars movies back to back and while some purists may disagree, starting with Rogue One, then leading into a New Hope, The Empire Strikes back and finishing with Return of The Jedi, is a winning combination in my eyes.

On reflection, while Star Wars may not be everyone’s cup of tea. What I think you would find hard to disagree with is what these occasions bring out in those involved and a station as whole. Whether it be an outlet for creativity in making a costume, assisting with making Star Wars cookies, collectively watching four movies back to back together or having a laugh at the Station Mechanical Supervisor dressed as Princess Leia. Living and working together in a small tight knit community for a year is a rewarding endeavour.  Coming into the winter months these moments are invaluable and will be the ones you remember when you look back on your time down here.

May the force be with you.
