Mid-Winter fuel tansfer at Casey
We wouldn't be here without fuel - diesel pretty well keeps the whole station running. Our summer resupply saw us fully refuelled with over 1 million litres of diesel pumpbed into our upper and lower fuel farms. Over the last seven month, we've used a bit from the upper fuel farm -= enter the mid-winter fuel transfer job. It's an all-station event, lead by our trusty diesos, where we transfer fuel from the lower fuel farm up into the upper fuel farm tanks so we are right to go for the rest of the year.
PLAN A: Tranfer fuel over 22 hours - two day shifts, everything goes smoothly.
(But nothing goes according to plan down here and we've had a little trouble with our lower fuel farm pump).
PLAN B: Transfer fuel over 39 hours, 24/7 roster - who doesn't love a night shift.
A lot can happen over the course of 39 hours:
* Snacks made ready for everyone
* Mr Whippy made an appearance at midnight - driving a Hagg, theme music blaring, delivering hot chocolate and biscuits to everyone
* Pretty sure we saw UFOs - 3am flashing lights in the sky moving in unusual directions, no grainy footage unfortunately
* Many many many kilomoters walked by our line walkers checking the fuel line for any leaks
* Hundreds of fuel dips completed
* Makeshift windbreaks constructed to keep the wind at bay
* Snow clearing/digging/burrowing to pass the time
* We all wore about seven layers of merino to keep warm
* Cracker sunset viewed
* Everyone jumped in and helped cook and clean behind the scenes
Success - job done safely, approximately 450,000L of fuel tranferred so we're set now for the rest of our season.
Go Team Casey! Awesome group of people.
