Casey rocks
Hello. Its me again, Mitch Tredenick. I’ll try keep this short, the end has some cool pictures.
I have spent 20 months here at Casey and love it. Full disclosure, I have not visited Macca, Mawson or Davis stations, but have met lots of other expeditioners who have been to those stations and love Casey as well.
There’s lots of amazing wildlife here like big Adelie penguin breeding colonies, elephant seal colonies, snow petrels, Weddell seal pupping and my new favourite animal, leopard seals.
Casey has incredible huts like Robbo’s, Jacks and Wilkes huts, which are accessible via walking, skiing or my favourite, Hagglund. Our best area to travel is Browning’s Peninsula which has multiple seal colonies and very beautiful terrain.
We have stacks of cool aviation like Wilkins Aerodrome which receives A319s and C17s from Australia. There is a smaller intra-continental runway called Skiway which receives DC3 Basler’s and Twin Otters, and we occasionally receive Kawasaki BK117 helicopters.
Casey has recently had great science projects like Bunger Hills at the Denman Glacier, and the traverse’s Million Year Ice Core project at Dome C. We also have station-based science by team Remediation who are a pleasure to have on station over summer.
Sure, we might not have the best auroras or sea ice, but we have a little bit of everything. Most importantly, the people I’ve met here at Casey are what has made it so great. Shout out to everyone from 76th, 77th, 78th, 79th ANARE at Casey and I can’t wait to meet the 80th.
If you or someone you know are fortunate enough to come to Casey station on a deployment, its an amazing place and has so much to offer. Anyway, enjoy the photos.
Lastly, shout out to my amazing mum Vanessa. I wouldn’t be in Antarctica if it wasn’t for her and all she’s done for me. Shout out to dad Peter as well, my beautiful sisters Eloise, Larissa and Adeline, five nephews, niece Chloe and the rest of my family. Love you all.
