Why Antarctica?
As the sun captures a little more of the horizon each day with the passing of the winter solstice, the flickering stars of the night sky and its passing auroras slowly turn into sunrises that linger for hours, bringing warmth from the sun to the faces of expeditioners on station.
Expeditioners come to Antarctica for different reasons, but a common syllable gets asked to those on their way to Antarctica from family, friends or even strangers. "Why?" Is this a question of intrigue or a question of bewilderment from those that ask? For me it's never been a question of why, but more a quote I heard some time ago that drives me to Antarctica; “Its not the years in your life that count, its the life in your years”. With those words how do I add to the life story of me? How do we add to the life story of us?
Enjoy a small snippet of photos to explain my why, and hopeful if your reading this give modernisation to your why, and see the world at home and abroad.
