Learning how to do the science

Adelie Penguin Census

Penguin Census

Due to the cancellation of intra-continental flights this year, there have been no incoming summer expeditioners. Normally these would include scientists involved in the various research projects on the surrounding islands at Mawson. With guidance from AAD, the current expeditioners have been recruited to carry out the annual Adelie penguin census. Following strict procedures and guidelines, teams of two were deployed to count, scan, photograph and repair infrastructure at the various islands' rookeries. We had been blessed with some magic weather that makes the task even more enjoyable. As long as the sea-ice is kind to us, future trips will still be required to gather all the necessary data for the science team back at Head office.
