From my experience the best camera you can have is the one you have with you when you want to take a picture.

All the gear, no idea

It’s a common situation though for expos, new and returning. Hearing or remembering all of the amazing things they might see in the remotest parts of the world. They want a 'proper camera'.

Who doesn’t want a few great shots to remember it by?

Who wouldn’t want to share what they are seeing with family and friends back home?

People from around the word spend thousands of dollars just for the opportunity to go to these places and you are getting paid! Better make the most of it.

So off you go researching what camera you want (aperture, ISO, F stop, shutter speed, stabilisation, price, availability, memory cards, I just want a camera that takes good pictures damn it!) and don’t forget the lenses *shudder* the lenses …

Congratulations!!!

Chances are you are now one of the many who have ... All the Gear and No Idea.

This isn’t buying a sports car without knowing how to drive, it is splurging on a pair of running shoes when gym shoes are all you have ever known. No matter what gear you have, it's different, a new way of experiencing the world, new mistakes to make and learn from. Just don’t drop it, that’s a mistake you only get to make once.

I like making the mistakes, despite my colorful language at the time. You learn from mistakes and when broadening your skills and experiences, you make them less often. That’s when you start moving up from No Idea to Some Idea.

Perhaps you are concerned that if you don’t get it right the first time, you will miss getting the shot you want through lack of skill? Mawson, Macquarie Island, Davis and Casey will never stop providing photos ops. The people back home? They won’t care how good the shot is, they just want to see what you are up too and maybe live a little vicariously through you.

Personally, give it a go. I do.

I might only get a little closer to Some Idea but it’s fun.
