If you’ve ever spent time around Macquarie Island’s king penguins, you’ll know one thing for sure—they are some of the most inquisitive creatures on the island. Whether you’re out on a hike, taking a break, or simply stopping to admire the scenery, chances are, you’re being watched.
It usually starts with just one. You pause for a rest, and suddenly, a single penguin locks eyes with you. There’s a moment of quiet assessment, then determined little steps. Before you know it, your lone observer is joined by another. Then another. Soon, an entire group is waddling over, craning their necks, tilting their heads, and inspecting you like a new arrival in their colony.
It’s not just idle curiosity—king penguins are naturally social and highly observant. While their regal posture and striking yellow-orange plumage give them an air of importance, their playful and nosy behaviour makes them some of the most endearing residents of Macquarie Island.
We’ll let the photos and video do the rest of the storytelling, but if you ever find yourself in the presence of king penguins, don’t be surprised if you become the centre of their attention. Just stand still, wait a few moments, and enjoy your new audience.
