How lucky am I?
My journey started about 5 years ago when I had the great idea to apply to be a mechanic in Antarctica.
At the end of 2022, I filled out all the required paper work and the journey began.
I made it through all the application processes first try, never did I think that was going to happen.
We went through various training in Hobart to give us the plethora of information needed to head to this special place and meet my Antarctic family of 27 winterers and 30 something summer crew.
Davis Station was where I was headed.
We boarded the RSV Nuyina at the beginning of October 2023 for a one-month voyage south.
On arrival to Davis we were greeted with snow- and ice-covered hills and our counter parts ready to head home after a 12-month stint here.
What a beautiful place!
We had an amazing season, so much so that I signed up to do it all again.
Fast forward to 2026 and I’m back at it again.
While we are only a few weeks into our winter season with the ship having just left a few weeks ago and taking the summer crew with it, we are now a crew of 26 people here until November.
I feel extremely lucky to have been selected to do this all again, I don’t think the ever-changing view and moodiness of the vista will ever grow old.
I have taken thousands of photos and not one of them does justice to how amazing this place is. I think the only way to truly experience it is to come down and have a look for yourself.
I’m a man of few words so I’ll tell the rest of the story with a small selection of pictures across my two seasons here at Davis station, which in my opinion is the best station.
