Back for more

In October 2023, I embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to Antarctica as part of the ICT Uplift project, serving as a SATCOM Technician. My journey began aboard Australia’s icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina, which took me to Davis Station in Antarctica. Over the course of more than five months, I immersed myself in the breathtaking beauty of the icy landscape, forged lifelong friendships, and cherished every moment of this unique experience. Davis Station has become my second home, and the people here have become like family.

I never anticipated that I would soon return to Antarctica. However, a phone call from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEEW) changed everything. They offered me an exciting new role as the ICT Uplift Team Lead for the same project I had participated in the previous year. I was thrilled at the prospect of leading a team in October 2024, especially knowing that we would be the first to install and commission 4G LTE technology at Davis Station. This advancement would allow expeditioners to make phone calls outside station limit to their loved ones and sharing the stunning Antarctic scenery with them.

Initially, I felt a wave of nervousness. Leading such a significant project was a daunting task and I worried about the potential challenges we might face. However, the unwavering support from my team both on the station and back at the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) bolstered my confidence. Their belief in me was instrumental in making this project a reality.

The moment of truth arrived when we conducted our first test call. I dialled my partner and daughter, and when my daughter answered, I shared the exciting news that people at Davis Station could now use their phones outside the wireless network. Her joyful reaction filled me with pride as she exclaimed, “I’m proud of you, Dad! This means you can come back home tomorrow!”

Overwhelmed with emotion, I felt a tear roll down my cheek. Explaining my absence to a six-year-old is never easy, but I reassured her that I would be home soon.

As I reflect on this incredible journey, I want to express how much I miss my family. To my daughter, Ruhbani and my beautiful partner, Harpreet, your love and support keep me going, and I look forward to reuniting with you soon.

Thank you to the Davis Station family for your support and time spent together; it was a pleasure to work with you all.

P.S. Miss you Puttar (Ruhbani) 7th March and Happy Birthday beautiful (Harpreet) 30th Dec.
