Hi I’m Will, Station Mechanical Supervisor at Davis station. Or as we are known here on station, Dieso’s.
From when I started my apprenticeship I have always wanted to go and work in another country for a year or so and thought why not try Antarctica. What better place for my first trip outside Australia. I never thought it would happen but here I am.
This experience has not been without its challenges having to be away from my family back in Australia for so long, but knowing I have their support has made things much easier.
It is hard to pick any one thing that stands out from another on this truly amazing experience. From the training when we arrived at Kingston, Tasmania, the trip on the RSV Nuyina and breaking ice on the voyage to Antarctica (and the ship getting bogged in the snow on the ice), first time driving a vehicle on the frozen ocean kilometres from the nearest shore and sleeping outside in a sleeping bag on the snow for survival training after a day’s hike away from station.
Another highlight of the season is the people. I am one of 25 expeditioners wintering here at Davis station and having the privilege of working with and exploring the Vestfold Hills. Spending time with a truly talented and skilfull group of people making what I am sure will be life long friends.
I am one of a team of three diesel mechanics here on station and because of my team we have been able to make every day work feel like a whole new adventure with their skills, experience and personalities entertaining to say the least.
Every day is still presenting new amazements and unforgettable memories, and I am keen to see what the rest of the season has to bring.
Regards,
William Jacobs – Station Mechanical Supervisor
