Field Training Officer Mark shares his fascination for the rocks of the Vestfold Hills.

Davis Rocks

I've spent quite a bit of time out in the Vestfold Hills this season and the rocks never fail to fascinate me. From the giant black dolerite dikes cutting through the landscape to curious erratics carried by the ice then perched and left behind when the ice retreated. There are places you can still see where the ice has polished the surface, leaving behind grooves to tell you which way the ice was slowly inching. There is a story wherever you look if you just know how to read it. I'm no geologist, but the joy in finding little bits of beauty in a landscape that can at first seem desolate and monotonous makes every trip special.

And it's a good thing the rocks are so interesting as one spends a lot of time looking at where to put your feet!
