The fate of primary production in Antarctic sea ice: the role of metazoan grazers SWADLING, A/Prof. Kerrie Larsemann Hills ASMA, Casey, Davis, Marine Science

How much organic carbon produced by algae that grow in sea ice is recycled by small grazers? We will answer this question by measuring grazing rates of these animals, using techniques including gut analysis.

High Resolution palaeoclimate analysis of the Windmill Islands: the last 200 years ROBERTS, Dr Donna Casey

Antarctic lake cores record a history of evaporation and precipitation in the preservation of climate sensitive microbial communities.

Magnetospheric substorm research using VLF/ELF radiowave observations at Casey CLILVERD, Dr Mark Casey

Huge amounts of energy from the solar wind (the Suns expanding atmosphere), are stored in the magnetosphere (Earths outer atmosphere), and released in geomagnetic storms that affect space and ground engineering systems (power systems, communications satellites, etc.).

Tomographic inversion of seismic data over holocene drift deposits from the George V Continental shelf, East Antarctica DEEN, Ms Tara Australia (or home country)

A joint Italian/Australian expedition collected multi-channel seismic data over the George Vth continental shelf in February-March 2000. Tomographic analysis of this data will provide evidence of ice sheet extension and retreat through time.

Relict penguin colonies in the AAT EMSLIE, Dr Steven (Steve) Ardery and Odbert Islands ASPA, Balaena Island, Bunger Hills, Wilkes Land Coast, Prydz Bay, Windmill Islands, Australia (or home country), Casey, Davis, USA

Abandoned (relict) Adélie penguin colonies will be investigated to determine the occupation history and diet of Adelie penguins in the Casey/Windmill Islands region. Radiocarbon dates will provide information on when penguins occupied and abandoned the region in response to climate change.

Tectonic, magmatic and hydrothermal evolution of ocean floor spreading at Macquarie Island DAVIDSON, Dr Garry Macquarie Island

Macquarie Island offers a rare land-based cross-section through the deep ocean floor, which covers 60% of our Earth. It formed 11 million years ago as slow spreading crust, which has had minimal study compared to more common fast spreading crust.

Assessing UV-B induced DNA damage in Antarctic plants: is desiccation a compounding factor? ROBINSON, Prof. Sharon Casey, HIMI, Australia (or home country)

Increasing UV-radiation over Antarctica each spring may damage DNA in plants. Our research will determine the susceptibility of Antarctic plants to such damage and investigate the effectiveness of protective and repair mechanisms.

Sea ice primary production off eastern Antarctica MCMINN, Prof. Andrew Macquarie Island, Marine Science, Australia (or home country), Other

Sea ice covers up to 20 million km2 of the Southern Ocean. When present it supports a vigorous ecosystem that provides energy and food for all other marine organisms.

The distribution and abundance of nesting sites of flying seabirds in eastern Prydz Bay WARD, Dr Simon Davis, Larsemann Hills ASMA, Law Base, Vestfold Hills

The locations and characteristics of nest sites in the Larsemann Hills of three lesser-known seabird species will be mapped. Rapid survey techniques will be trialled and the diets and chronology of breeding determined.
