Project information
Project aim
Increasing UV-radiation over Antarctica each spring may damage DNA in plants. Our research will determine the susceptibility of Antarctic plants to such damage and investigate the effectiveness of protective and repair mechanisms. This will help predict how plants globally will cope with future climate change.

UV-B screening potential is higher in two cosmopolitan moss species than in a co-occurring Antarctic endemic moss - implications of continuing ozone depletion Global Change Biology, 2006
(Ref: 12867)
Authors:Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature
Concentrations of UV-B absorbing pigments and anthocyanins were measured in three moss species, over a summer growing season in Antarctica. Pigment concentrations were compared with a range of climatic variables to determine if there was evidence that pigments were induced by UV-B radiation…

Concentrations of UV-B absorbing pigments and anthocyanins were measured in three moss species, over a summer growing season in Antarctica. Significant seasonal differences were found in the potential UV-B screening pigments. The most exposed species, Ceratodon purpureus…
