Winter foraging success of Southern Ocean predators in relation to stochastic variation in sea-ice extent and winter water formation HINDELL, Prof. Mark Casey, Davis, Macquarie Island, Other

This study will use innovative technology to measure the winter spatial foraging patterns and nett energy gain of adult female elephant seals (and potentially Weddell seals), while simultaneously providing high-resolution data on the physical nature of the water column in which the seals live.

Observing transport and water mass changes south of Australia (CLIVAR SR3, 140E) RINTOUL, Dr Stephen (Steve) Marine Science

An oceanographic transect from Tasmania to Antarctica will be completed. The measurements will be compared to earlier observations from the same transect to determine how the climate of the ocean is changing with time.

Australia's Census of Antarctic Marine Life project STODDART, Prof. David (Michael) Marine Science, Australia (or home country)

This project is a part of the international "Census of Antarctic Marine Life" (CAML) which is to be conducted during the International Polar Year.

Analysis of East Antarctic drainage basins with altimetric, interferometric, gravity and GPS techniques to determine their state of flux COLEMAN, Prof. Richard Australia (or home country), Casey, Law Dome, Windmill Islands

This project will reassess the mass balance of Law Dome and a large sector of the Antarctic ice sheet south of Casey by exploiting the time history of change that can be obtained by resurveying historical surface elevation and gravity networks, started in the 1960s.

Lead isotopes and heavy metals in highly resolved Law Dome accumulation and Talos Dome firn and as tracers of Australian/Southern African dust input to East Antarctica during present mild climatic conditions ROSMAN, Prof. Kevin Australia (or home country), Casey, Law Dome

Studies of metals in Antarctic ice show that dust levels in the Antarctic atmosphere are strongly linked to the climatic cycle and are greater in the colder glacial periods. Current dust levels are relatively low and variable.

Modelling investigations of the shoaling of iron-rich upper circumpolar deep water and its role in the regulation of primary production at 60-65S GABRIC, Prof. Albert (Al) Australia (or home country)

This proposal will provide an analysis of variability and trends in upwelling of nutrient rich Upper Circumpolar Deep Water through the use of both observational data and ocean circulation models.

Dome A Terahertz Observatory (DATO) WALSH, Dr Wilfred Australia (or home country), Other

New technologies permit terahertz frequency astronomical observations, but only from select locations on the Earth's surface.

Ultrasound capability for Australian Antarctic bases HART, Dr Rob Australia (or home country), Casey, Davis, Mawson

Ultrasound can be used in many medical conditions. Normally, it is used by trained medical professionals (sonographers or radiologists), who may not be available in Antarctica and remote sites in mainland Australia.

Climate change and carbon gain in antarctic mosses BALL, Prof. Marilyn Casey, Windmill Islands, Australia (or home country)

The distribution of plants in Antarctica is chiefly limited by the availability of water and sufficiently high temperatures.

Response of sea ice algae to temperature and oxidative stress PHANG, Prof. Siew-moi Davis, Casey

An understanding of how Antarctic organisms adapt to environmental change is a major strategic area of Antarctic science. Sea ice algae are of particular interest as they are important primary producers of the Antarctic ecosystem.
