Project information
Project aim
This proposal will provide an analysis of variability and trends in upwelling of nutrient rich Upper Circumpolar Deep Water through the use of both observational data and ocean circulation models. We will compare the variability in the biological response as derived from in situ data sets and satellite data with the physical variability. The linking between large-scale hydrodynamic circulation patterns and regional biological processes is a key novelty in this proposal.

The Southern Ocean is vitally important in understanding climate change, both regionally and globally, due to factors such as the presence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, seasonal sea-ice and strong Southern Hemisphere westerly winds. Also, the upper branch of the Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW)…

Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) is the most extensive water mass in the Australian Circumpolar Current (ACC). Upper CDW (UCDW) is studied here over the period 1958-2005 using Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) reanalysis data.

The upwelling of iron-rich Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) is thought to be critical for primary production in the Southern Ocean, since iron has been shown to be a limiting factor in what is otherwise a high nutrient region.
