Well, here I am again.
I am so lucky to be spending my third Winter in Antarctica, and I must say “loving it”.
Not much changes down here once winter hits, everything just seems to drop back a gear. It’s good to see not much changes, but as the days melt away, get shorter and shorter and the dark starts to take over, this isn't a bad thing as now the auroras start and WOW have they been spectacular.
The best way I can explain an aurora (in mechanic speak) is the big orange ball in the sky sends solar winds towards earth hitting the atmosphere and then some kind of voodoo magic happens and you get auroras. See magic.
So as the nights get longer I start to head out and brave the cold to get some photos. At first when you go outside and look up you see what look like clouds moving in the sky and as your eyes quickly adjust you start to see that these clouds have a hint of green in them. It’s always a bit exciting when you set up your camera, and take your first photo and have look at the screen for the results, BOOM the sky has come alive.
This is by far one of my favourite things to see in Antarctica.
