Much to see and do
Mawson Station experienced a mix of clear weather and amber conditions this week, providing both productive work windows and regular reminders of who is ultimately in charge. Heavy plant operations progressed well, including snow clearing, hole drilling and installation of a culvert for communications and power cabling along the 'road to nowhere', a route now better serviced than it is utilised.
Coastal activity was notable, with two icebergs breaking off the nearby glacier, delivering spectacular results and briefly outperforming all scheduled entertainment. The event was widely observed, thoroughly photographed, and with the sea ice degrading, the landscape looks different each day.
Indoor activities continued, including darts, ping pong, snooker, and band camp although participation has been affected by a station illness impacting 'key' personnel. Operations remain ongoing with minor adjustments, increased reliance on backup plans, and a renewed appreciation for those still upright.
Operations will continue as planned, subject to weather, health, and reality.
