Mawson electrician, Thom, reflects on the life cycle of the penguins and seals in Antarctica, and his anticipation as he prepares to head home.

An Amazing journey

As my time on station comes to a close, I'm excited for my final weeks here. It’s been an amazing journey with a great bunch of people.

It's been so interesting to see the full cycle of the animals—from watching the Adélies slowly disappear early this year to seeing the first ones coming back to their rookeries now. To see the emperor penguins holding their eggs and then to see their chunky chicks running about is just amazing, and the first of the Weddell seal pups are starting to appear.

It's been a great journey, and I'm looking forward to getting home, out of the wind, and enjoying some sunshine.

Honorable mention to my girlfriend, Cass.
