Ever wondered what goes on in the mysterious life of our station's doctor? Between checking up on 19 patients, monthly medicals and tackling the exciting task of Maximo Stocktake – counting thousands of items, checking expiry dates and reboxing expired medicines – there's more to our job than meets the eye. But let's be real, the rest of what we do remains shrouded in mystery. Sounds thrilling, right?
But what's even more thrilling? Escaping the confines of the Red Shed, ditching the computer, and hitting the sea ice on Thursday mornings.
Sea Ice Thursdays: A Day with Jason the FTO
Meet Jason, our heavy metal-loving field training officer with a beard even Gandalf would envy. Every Thursday, we brave the icy wilderness to drill into sea ice, not just for kicks but to keep track of how thick and solid it is. Why? Because it's crucial for understanding climate change and making sure our Haggs don't end up like Titanic 2.0.
Petra's Points refer to four locations around our operational area, monitored only when safe travel on sea ice is possible. We use a reliable Makita Power Drill, metal ruler, shovel, and measuring tape to measure sea ice depth, snow cover, freeboard, and quality. Definitely more satisfying than wrestling with Maximo's inventory!
