It’s hard to believe how quickly the season has flown. Life on Macquarie Island has a strange rhythm, somehow both timeless and fleeting. One minute you’re stepping off the ship with a pack full of expectations, and the next, you’re staring down the final stretch, wondering where all the days have gone.
This little sub-Antarctic Island has a way of getting under your skin. From the relentless wind to the unforgettable wildlife, every day brings something raw, real and amazingly beautiful. There’s a simplicity here that sharpens your senses. The ocean, the sky, the chatter of penguins, it all becomes part of your everyday.
Now, full speed ahead, our amazing team is preparing for the arrival of Nuyina. The resupply window is coming fast, and there’s plenty to do. Sorting, measuring, packing, labeling and coordinating all in motion, and sometimes all at once. There’s a buzz in the air, a mix of anticipation and the feeling of nearing the end of something extraordinary.
As much as I miss home, family, friends, and my dog, I’m not quite ready to leave; there’s something truly special about this place. Is it the countless hours hiking on what feels like an uphill waterlogged mattress, or the overhead flight of the light-mantled albatross (who sound like asthmatic, wheezy chickens), the constant snotty sneezes of the weaners and their never-ending playful fighting, or maybe the cheeky and inquisitive king penguins? I can’t help but hope to see it again one day.
Ok that’s enough reminiscing, time to get back to work…
