From a sad departure to a very happy return: One expeditioner's journey

Let me take you back

Let me take you back to sometime around March 12, 2021. A horrible, sad and very depressing day for me to look back on.

Why is it so depressing you ask?

Well, that day was my departure date from my last season at Macca. And like a lot of expos when that boat arrives, I was definitely not ready to leave!

So why do expos become so obsessed with Macca?

Well, it’s everything really. From that morning slap in the face of those 30 knot north westerlies, to that horrible smelling kelp and seal poo layer of mud that builds up on your wellies, through to the ever-present elephant seals, orcas, gentoo penguins, fur seals and a multitude of albatrosses and petrels circling overhead.

It might have something to do with the auroras lighting up the night sky or those mornings where you wake up and the plateau is pretending to be fancy and wearing a lovely cloud layer as a hat.

It could be the amazing people you get to spend your winter down here with, and I reckon the phenomenal chefs cooking up some of the most decadent treats you can imagine.

It could be the tussock hopping or the gruelling jump ups as you hike across the plateau, that incredible sunset as you look down towards Davis Point on a cracking spring afternoon.

I don’t have a definitive answer for you, all I can tell you is this is one bloody stoked expeditioner who is so, so, so happy to be back!
