A poetic tribute to this beautiful place we call home.

Magical Macquarie Island

First impressions of Macquarie Island, this Sub-Antarctic land that appears out of the ocean, covered in a mysterious cloud and misty rain.

Oh, how the seasons can change in a blink of an eye.

Four seasons in one hour here on Macca.

Our time so far, has seen some magical moments in the weather and seasons here.

We arrived on Macquarie Island at the start of Winter, the day light hours were disappearing fast and the wilder weather has approached.

Sunshine, rain, hail and snow all in one hour.

Definitely makes it an interesting and a challenging environment to work in and live.

But you get to experience some very unique and memorable moments living here.

Often, we stop and look around and think how lucky we are to live and work in a World Heritage Park and a Sub-Antarctic Island.

Surrounded by wildlife and spectacular scenery.

The closest way to describe this island, is like a Sir David Attenborough documentary and a Jurassic Park movie.

Giant Petrels soaring high and Elephant seals laying around station.

Gentoo penguins returning from fishing and walking through station and the odd Fur Seal, to surprise you behind a tussock.

This little island, we know and call home. “The Green Sponge” is ever changing and as the daylight returns, so will the wildlife. The island will become a hive of activity, with breeding and new-borns to keep us entertained and in awe of nature’s beauty.
