Story about the Casey Station winter plumbing team and an insight into some of their less pleasant but critical duties on Station.

Strength amongst the smells

Prepared for a tough winter with two plumbers, we unexpectedly welcomed an extra two legends who have already found a place to call their home away from home; Ty the site service locator and Paddy the last-minute legend from Melbourne. The arrival of these two has created a sense of relaxation, after what we thought was going to be a challenging winter managing the workload with only two people.

Our waste treatment plant, or "poop plant," is by far my least favourite of all buildings to look after. The constant battle I have with skimming the grease trap and not getting sludge on myself has been a losing battle. I’m hoping to turn it around and start winning the battle at some point over my season.

If we aren’t dealing with sludge, mechanical grease or old food that we macerate into our poop plant we are cleaning out the grease tanks, and if you haven’t smelled the inside of a kitchen grease tank, let’s just say it doesn’t tickle the nose holes very pleasantly.

Our team's strength does not just sit within the plumbing group as our entire station is already proving that we can overcome any obstacle thrown our way. The bond that we have already created so early in the season has me feeling confident that it will be long lasting.

Life down here is something magical and I can now understand why reintegrating back into society may be difficult. It’s not every day you come across so many amazing people who will drop anything to help you out. Last week I was sick and had to isolate in my room for 48- hours. During this time there was no shortage of people asking if I was okay and offering to deliver food or snacks to me.

I am truly grateful to be working with such amazing people in such a special place.
