Mail delivery at Casey – first delivery since February!
The recent arrival of the RSV Nuyina, sitting 100 nautical miles off Casey station, brought more than just new faces. As helicopters touched down on the pad, they carried with them not only people and critical supplies — but something also exciting: bags of mail.
For the first time since February, letters and packages from loved ones back home began making their way up into the Red Shed library. No sooner had the Australia Post–sealed bags hit the floor than the call went out: “Find Brian!”
By day, Brian is our Bureau of Meteorology technician; by night, he’s the Casey Postmaster — one of those essential secondary duties that keeps station life ticking. And on a day like this, it’s as official as it gets.
If there were a world record for opening mail bags and delivering every letter to its rightful owner, Casey station would have claimed it — under 15 minutes, and the delivery was done.
A week later, with the first flight into Wilkins Aerodrome fast approaching, Brian took things one step further. On a Sunday, no less, he opened the Casey Post Office so expeditioners could send their own letters and postcards home — possibly making it the only post office in Australia open that day!
To all the family and friends who took the time to write, send gifts, and think of us: thank you. The morale boost was instant and unmistakable. Although spirits were already high, the Casey Post Office swinging back into business lifted them even higher.
Finally, in other Casey news — the sun is shining again, the penguins are returning, and Nick’s breakfast dessert is as good as ever.
Casey out.
