Inspiring the Next Generation of Family Plumbers.

Carrying the torch

My name is Mitch Tredenick, and I am a 32-year-old plumber currently stationed at Casey Station for the 2023-24 season. I am proud to be a third-generation plumber, a tradition that started with my grandfather, Donnie. My journey into plumbing began early, with work experience in grades 11 and 12 in high school.

Starting my career was not easy. After graduating in 2010, I faced the challenge of securing a stable apprenticeship. Though I initially found an apprenticeship through group training, I lost it after a year. Fortunately, my uncle stepped in, offering me the chance to complete my apprenticeship at our family’s plumbing company. This opportunity taught me that good things in life don’t come easy, and the struggle makes the rewards even sweeter.

Once I completed my apprenticeship, I sought to gain as much diverse plumbing experience as possible. I spent a year working on new home under slabs and 'rough ins,' which was incredibly demanding. Between jobs, I travelled extensively, visiting many countries by the age of 26. While in Mexico, I worked at a hostel as a plumber and handyman for about seven months. One memorable project was installing a sewer drain for the workers' laundry tub, solving a problem of soapy water run off that affected our rescue dog, Noche.

Upon returning to Australia, I worked in the Northern Rivers, NSW, focusing on rural plumbing. I then moved back to Queensland to earn my Certificate IV in Plumbing. During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked as a deckhand on a fishing trawler with 3 months sea time. Later, I joined a major company in Brisbane, specializing in pump service, backflow prevention, and gas fitting.

In 2021, my sister suggested I apply for a job in Antarctica. Though I made the reserve list, I was advised by the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) to gain experience with boilers. I took this advice on and spent 18 months working at Queensland’s largest private hospital, which was powered by a massive tube fire boiler.

When I reapplied to the AAD in 2023, I successfully landed the job. Every moment here has been incredible, and the journey to get here makes the experience even more fulfilling. I owe special thanks to my uncle Mark, cousin Reece Holmes, and my grandfather Donnie for teaching me the family trade and supporting me along the way. I wouldn't be here without them.
