Photosynthesis of subantarctic plants as affected by leaf and canopy temperature variation SCHORTEMEYER, Dr Marcus Macquarie Island, Australia (or home country), HIMI

Recent global warming is evident for many subantarctic islands. Rising temperatures will affect photosynthesis and respiration of plants, and ultimately their growth. This project will use a novel combination of methodologies.

Using microsatellites as markers to explore genetic variation in Ceratodon purpureus ROBINSON, Prof. Sharon Australia (or home country), Bunger Hills, Casey, Clark Peninsula ASPA, Davis, Mawson, Vestfold Hills, Wilkes Land Coast, Windmill Islands

Levels of genetic variation in Antarctic mosses suggest the possibility of mutation induced by UV-B radiation. Patterns of somatic mutation will be investigated using microsatellite markers in comparative and experimental approaches.

Near-shore seabed environmental variation and processes, Casey-Wilkes Region O'BRIEN, Dr Philip (Phil) Australia (or home country), Casey, Wilkes Land Coast

This project aims to understand the production, transport and deposition of sedimentary particles in the shallow marine environment around Casey Station as a contribution to understanding and managing the impact of anthropogenic pollutants in the area.

The variability of the Southern Annular Mode and associations with high latitude weather and climate SIMMONDS, Prof. Ian Australia (or home country)

The project explores the extent and manner in which the Southern Annular Mode influences, and is influenced by, climate variability in Antarctic and subantarctic regions. It will reveal the degree to which current trends in these features can be seen to be related.

Variability and stability of Antarctic Bottom Water ENGLAND, Prof. Matthew Australia (or home country)

Antarctic Bottom Water is a major component of the global thermohaline circulation, and as such, plays a key role in controlling Antarctic and Southern Ocean climate. Our knowledge of the variability and stability of Antarctic water masses remains limited.

Holocene sea-ice history: the association between deep-sea and continental ice core records QUILTY, Prof. Patrick (Pat) Australia (or home country)

The Holocene sea-ice project brings together for the first time, records from the Antarctic continent and deep sea sediments that will allow us to calibrate three sea-ice extent surrogates…

Objective determination of water mass property changes in the Circumpolar Current during 1991 - 1996 TOMCZAK, Prof. Matthias Australia (or home country), Marine Science

Antarctica is the formation region for most of the world ocean’s water masses. Their properties are determined through interaction with the atmosphere in winter, when their formation region is inaccessible.

A Meteor Radar for Measuring Mesospheric and Lower Thermospheric Winds and Temperatures at Davis Station REID, Prof. Iain Davis

A meteor radar will be installed at Davis Station to measure temperatures and wind velocities in the 80 to 100 km region of the atmosphere. It will do this by tracking the trail of ionized gas produced by meteors as they pass through this region.

Long-range acoustic observation of the Antarctic ice rifting and calving events using the CTBT hydroacoustic listening station off Cape Leeuwin GAVRILOV, Prof. Alexander Australia (or home country)

The project involves the use of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty hydroacoustic listening station off Cape Leeuwin, Western Australia, to remotely detect and analyse rifting and calving events on the Eastern Antarctic ice shelves.

Functional genomics of phytoplankton species along a gradient of saline lakes LAYBOURN-PARRY, Prof. Johanna (Jo) Davis

Antarctic saline lakes are stressed aquatic environments.
