Emeritus Professor William (Bill) Budd passed away on 23 January 2022.

He was a founding figure in Australian glaciology, and the first glaciology program leader at the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD).

"Many of us had the opportunity to work with Emeritus Prof Bill Budd, aptly described as a ‘father of glaciology’, in his enduring association with the Australian Antarctic Program,” said Prof Nicole Webster, AAD Chief Scientist.

“Bill’s connection to Antarctica spanned many decades, including his strong involvement in glaciology and atmospheric research at University of Tasmania,” she said.

“His memory and scientific legacy will endure, especially through the many generations of scientists he trained, supported and mentored. Vale Bill.”
