The islands and surrounding waters offer a unique opportunity for conducting scientific research, due to a combination of their location south of the Antarctic Convergence, the presence of permanent glaciers, the large colonies of wildlife of high conservation significance, the complex flora and the largely unmodified environment and ecosystems.

The research undertaken at Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) Marine Reserve contributes to a better understanding of the environment, how it is changing and why. It supports the Australian Government’s management obligations. Research may also contribute to a greater understanding of the global impacts of climate change on biodiversity.

A 2024 report, Conservation values in the marine environment surrounding Heard Island and the McDonald Islands summarises the latest research in the region.

The Parks Australia Science Atlas and the Australian Antarctic program science database contain more information about research conducted in the region.
