Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) are a sub-Antarctic island group. They are located in the Southern Ocean, about 4000 km south west of mainland Australia.
The islands enjoy World Heritage protection and marine reserve status. They are managed as part of the Australian Antarctic Territory. The islands are now unoccupied by humans and remain biologically pristine.
