Dr Colin Southwell has made a significant contribution to the Australian Antarctic Program by providing important insights and breadth of knowledge for wildlife conservation and management.
He developed a remotely operating camera system to enable an expansion of seabird monitoring. This system allows a more accurate record of seabird breeding chronology and reproductive success.
The camera system is now being used around Antarctica by countries including the UK, Italy, USA, Poland, Ukraine, Korea and Argentina. It and has become a critical component of ecosystem monitoring for the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).
