Dick Williams has made an outstanding contribution to the Australian Southern Ocean marine program. He has made regular trips to the Antarctic as voyage leader of marine reearch voyages since 1977, including the maiden voyage of Aurora Australis to the Heard Island region in mid-winter 1990.
He has also played an important role in representing Australia in numerous international marine science programs and conferences.
