Summary

Collaborative research has shown that diesel fuels used at Australian and Argentine Antarctic stations are chemically distinct. Such findings can assist with understanding the relative risks associated with fuel spills, the identification of specific compounds for monitoring, and the expected timelines, prioritisation of and likely success of planned remediation and clean-up actions. Other national Antarctic programs are encouraged to contribute to a chemical library of fuels used across Antarctica in order to aid all Parties in understanding and managing the risks associated with the use of fuels and the clean up of fuel spill sites.
