Where operationally possible, mail will be supported on flights to Antarctica. All mail must be received 10 days prior to the scheduled departure of the flight. Purpose of voyage: Yacht carrying NHK film crew
Comments: Privately chartered vessel carrying limited mail and small cargo items from New Zealand to Macquarie Island. Vessel did not reach Macquarie Island due to bad weather and mail etc could not be delivered. Mail will be returned to Australia for delivery to Macquarie Island at next opportunity.

Purpose of voyage: MI and Casey summer deployment.

Comments: The voyage will deploy personnel and minimal essential cargo, mail and supplies to Macquarie Island and Casey station. Helicopters will be used from the ice edge at Casey. Ship-shore transfers at Macquarie Island may be by small boat, depending upon weather and sea conditions. Macquarie Island cargo will be limited to essential supplies, personal effects and summer science equipment, with a maximum unit weight of 50kg. All gear taken to the island must be free of soil, animal and plant matter. In particular, field equipment and footwear should be scrubbed with bleach. A carry on board/cabin luggage restriction of 30kg applies. The SAO contact officer for the voyage is Christine Woolley on 62 323 270.

Comments: Intended to deliver small amount of cargo, mail and one person to Macquarie Island. Voyage abandoned due to adverse weather conditions. Vessel departed Hobart 1200 15/10/01 local and returned to Hobart 2100 17/10/01 local.

Purpose of voyage: Marine Science (CLIVAR)

Comments: The voyage will undertake extensive Marine Science activities from the southern Tasmanian coastline to the Antarctic Coast. Some trials and equipment calibration may take place in the Derwent before or after bunkering, followed by further trials in deep water after departure.

Comments: The voyage completed the resupply of Davis Station over fast ice. Polar Bird also delivered fresh supplies to Zongshan station and Law Base and deployed summer personnel to Davis before proceeding to Sansom Island where up to 4 helicopters were used to establish the AMISOR (Amery Ice Shelf) field party and equipment. Wastes were also removed from Law Base and Sansom Island. The fuel depot at Sansom Island was restocked. On attempting to depart the area on 16 December the Polar Bird was unable to penetrate the heavy pack ice which accumulated following unseasonal conditions. Personnel and essential cargo were subsequently transferred to Mawson by the Aurora Australis. Polar Bird became free on 14 January, with assistance from Aurora Australis.

Comments: The purpose of the voyage was to resupply Casey Station, to retrieve 2001 wintering personnel, to deploy their replacements and retrieve summer personnel. After completing those tasks the Aurora was diverted to Prydz bay to assist the Polar Bird, then to Mawson to deploy personnel and cargo. The Aurora returned to Prydaz bay and assisted in freeing the Polar Bird on 14 January, before returning to Hobart.

Comments: The departure date for this voyage is indefinite and subject to weather and sea conditions on the voyage to Hobart. The Polar Bird will undertake the resupply of Mawson Station, deliver 580,000L of SAB to Mawson, discharge a 100t crane, undertake the changeover of Davis and Mawson stations and retrieve Mawson and Davis summer personnel.
