Philip Barnaart is the first person to have performed the role of Station Leader at each of the Australian Antarctic Division’s stations; Mawson, Davis, Casey and Macquarie Island.

In 1988 Philip led the traverse for the re-establishment of the Prince Charles Mountains route, making possible the re-opening of the area for a summer base and accompanying science programs. He plotted and marked the route and later re-marked it to make it shorter and safer. Also in 1988 he initiated the establishment of a new field hut in the Colbeck Archipelago.
