Black-browed albatrosses breed at four known locations in Chile: Diego de Almagro (15,900 pairs, Lawton et al. 2003), Evangelistas (4,700; Arata et al. 2003), Ildefonso (47,000; this presentation) and Diego Ramirez (55,300; Robertson et al. unpublished). After the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas…
This book is the outcome of 132 interviews with women who have lived and worked in Antarctica. It examines their reasons for going there, the work that they undertake, their experiences of community life with its opportunities and challenges…
The review of southern hemisphere minke whales is currently a priority work item within the International Whaling Commission (IWC) Scientific Committee (SC). Reliable abundance estimation is an important component of the review process.
Subantarctic Macquarie Island has substantial areas of feldmark on its plateau above 200 m altitude. Samples of the substrate (5.5 cm in depth) from bare areas of feldmark contained viable propagules of bryophyte species found at adjacent and distant sites on the island.
The thesis contains 13 research papers, of which 10 published and 3 in various stages of submission/acceptance. Papers in chapters 2-7 deal with results from ship-based research on top predator communities or individual bird species in the pelagic environment.
Data from the 1995/96 pelagic monitoring survey by Aurora Australis are used to provide a sightings estimate of abundance of humpback whales south of 60*S in Area IV of 900 with a CV of 0.46. This estimate is notably lower than that of 3300 for an equivalent area from the 1988/89 IWC/IDCR survey.
The ice-free habitats of continental Antarctica are among the most geographically isolated on Earth. Colonization of Antarctica requires the immigration of dissemules from distant biotic sites across large distances of snow or open ocean.
Deuterium excess (d = dD - 8 * d18O) values in surface snow are presented for central and east Antarctica. The samples are primarily from Soviet, French, and Australian traverses. The d values exhibit a large change going from coastal sites to high-altitude sites on the ice sheet.
