Summary
Data from the 1995/96 pelagic monitoring survey by Aurora Australis are used to provide a sightings estimate of abundance of humpback whales south of 60*S in Area IV of 900 with a CV of 0.46. This estimate is notably lower than that of 3300 for an equivalent area from the 1988/89 IWC/IDCR survey. A number of possible reasons for this difference are presented for discussion.
