Antarctic moss coping with the ozone hole. Proceedings of the 12th International Congress on Photosynthesis, 2001 (Ref: 10165)
Category 3: Conference paper

Natural variability in surface reflectance was studied in 3 species of moss (Grimmia antarctici, Bryum pseudotriquetrum and Ceratodon purpureus) in continental Antarctica. The moss community is well developed in Wilkes Land, eastern Antarctica…

Laternula elliptica as a biomonitor for metal pollutants from waste disposal sites in the Antarctic 3rd International Conference on Marine Pollution and Ecotoxicology. 10-14 June 2001, Hong Kong, 2001 (Ref: 9852)
Category 3: Abstract

The old practice of dumping refuse from Antarctic stations in landfill sites has created localised contamination of the terrestrial and marine environment.

Snow Algae of the Windmill Islands, Continental Antarctica: Desmotetra aureospora , sp. nov. and D. antarctica , comb. nov. (Chlorophyta). Journal of Phycology, 2001 (Ref: 9611)
Authors:
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Two cryophilic Desmotetra species, D. aureospora, sp. nov., and D. antarctica (Fritsch) Ling appear to be unique to the southern hemisphere snow ecosystem, or at least to the Windmill Is. region, Antarctica.

Mirrors in Ice: Fulmarine petrels and Antarctic ecosystems, 2001 (Ref: 9590)
Category 3: Thesis, higher degree

The thesis contains 13 research papers, of which 10 published and 3 in various stages of submission/acceptance. Papers in chapters 2-7 deal with results from ship-based research on top predator communities or individual bird species in the pelagic environment.

Novel intact glycolipids in sediments from an Antarctic lake (Ace Lake) Organic Geochemistry, 2001 (Ref: 9624)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Two novel glycolipids, docosanyl 3-O-methyl-alpha - rhamnopyranoside and docosanyl 3-O-methylxylopyranoside, were identified as the most abundant GC-amenable components of extracts of sediments of Ace Lake, an Antarctic meromictic lake.

Arbovirus of Marine Mammals: a New Alphavirus Isolated from the Elephant Seal Louse, Lepidophthirus macrorhini . Journal of Virology, 2001 (Ref: 9615)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

A novel alphavirus was isolated from the louse Lepidophthirus macrorhini, collected from southern elephant seals, Mirounga leonina, on Macquarie Island, Australia. The virus displayed classic alphavirus ultrastructure and appeared to be serologically different from known Australasian alphaviruses.

Easily measured call attributes can detect vocal differences between Weddell seals from two areas. Bioacousics: The International Journal of Animal Sound and its Recording, 2001 (Ref: 9738)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Underwater vocalizations of Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) were recorded approximately 1400 km apart at Casey and Davis, Antarctica. Recordings were made during the 1992 and 1997 breeding seasons at Davis and during the 1997 season at Casey.
