This report to the Seventh Meeting of the Parties has been prepared by the Advisory Committee Chair and Vice-chair with the assistance of the Agreement's Secretariat under Article IX 6 (e).
This paper presents the results of a review of progress in the implementation of the recommendations identified in the Report of the Joint CEP/SC-CAMLR Workshop on Climate Change and Monitoring (2016). This review was undertaken during the 2021-22 intersessional period by Argentina, Australia…
Recommendations … (1) That this research plan with a revised sampling design within six existing research blocks in Division 58.4.1 and one existing research block in Division 58.4.2 be adopted. (2) If directed fishing was not allowed in Division 58.4.1 in 2021/22…
A draft workplan to develop a Management Strategy Evaluation for the CCAMLR Trend Analysis Rules and alternative data-limited approaches for managing toothfish fisheries under research plans is presented for discussion by WG-FSA.
We present an update of ageing and estimates of biological parameters, and of the integrated stock assessment for Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) fishery in CCAMLR Divisions 58.4.1 and 58.4.2. The update of ageing and estimates of biological parameters addresses Milestone 1.10…
In this paper, we report on fish bycatch during exploratory fishing activities undertaken in Divisions 58.4.1 and 58.4.2 during the period 2016 to 2022. Fish bycatch was composed of at least 14 species or species groups. In 2021 and 2022, exploratory fishing occurred in Division 58.4.2 only…
Elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) are among the least productive fish species, which make their populations vulnerable to increased mortality. Although skates exhibit elevated vulnerability to fishing, they are commonly caught as incidental bycatch in demersal fisheries.
This paper provides an overview of the deployments of Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) loggers and Benthic Video Cameras (BVCs) to fishing gear in the Dissostichus mawsoni exploratory fishery in Divisions 58.4.1 and 58.4.2 since 2015/16.
Based on a recommendation by WG-FSA-2021 we present an update on stock parameters, including recruitment indices from the random stratified trawl survey, and Chapman estimates of vulnerable biomass from tag-recapture data for the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides)…
The annual random stratified trawl survey was undertaken in Division 58.5.2 in the vicinity of Heard Island and McDonald Islands during April 2022. Based on data from this survey, this paper provides a preliminary assessment for mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari) population structure…
During April 2022, the annual random stratified trawl survey (RSTS) around Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) was conducted in CCAMLR Division 58.5.2, with the completion of 165 stations. The survey was conducted on the FV Cape Arkona.
The software platform CASAL (C++ algorithmic stock assessment laboratory) has been used to implement integrated statistical catch-at-age toothfish stock assessments in CCAMLR since 2005. However, CASAL is no longer being developed or maintained.
Exploratory fishing for Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) in East Antarctica (Divisions 58.4.1 and 58.4.2) began in 2003. Since 2017/18, exploratory fishing has been conducted under successive research plans by Australia, France, Japan, Republic of Korea and Spain. Here…
Exploratory fishing for Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) in East Antarctica (Divisions 58.4.1 and 58.4.2) began in 2003. While preliminary integrated stock assessments have been developed for these Divisions…

The ANGWIN Antarctic Gravity Wave Instrument Network has the ability to measure gravity-wave characteristics at various locations and height ranges.
Atmospheric gravity waves play an important role in transporting energy and momentum between atmospheric spheres and drive circulations that affect key processes such as formation of the ozone hole and the cold summer polar mesosphere.
The ANGWIN Antarctic Gravity Wave Instrument Network has the ability to measure gravity-wave characteristics at various locations and height ranges.
The zonal wavenumber spectrum of planetary waves in the atmosphere above Antarctica was studied in two contrasting years: in 2019 when there was a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW), and in 2020 when the Antarctic stratospheric vortex was unusually strong and long-lived.
We have considered TOMS (2000–2004) and OMI (2005–2021) total ozone column (TOC) data sets for the second part of winter cold period (January–March). Variations in both total ozone and characteristics of the Fourier wave harmonics with zonal numbers 1–5 are analyzed.
Australia has decided not to proceed with a proposal to construct and operate a paved runway near Davis research station in the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica (the Davis Aerodrome Project), following careful consideration of the likely environmental impact, cost and complexity of the project.
Marine non-native species present an increasing threat to Antarctic marine ecosystems, particularly under climate change. This paper sets out progress with ongoing work initiated by the CEP Subsidiary Group on Climate Change Response (SGCCR)…
The Australian Antarctic Strategy and 20 Year Action Plan: Update 2022 reaffirms Australia's ongoing commitment to best practice environmental stewardship in Antarctica. Related high priority actions over the next five years include establishing a Cleaner Antarctica science program…
Increasing levels of chemical contamination in the Antarctica environment are resulting from global and regional human activities. Unlike other areas of the world, Antarctica lacks continent-wide systematic and coordinated monitoring of contaminants. Germany, Italy, Australia, United Kingdom…
There is growing evidence that the Antarctic is increasingly exposed to chemical stressors. Antarctica is impacted by global issues such as climate change and long-range transport of chemicals. Furthermore, expanding tourism and research activities…
