Summary

Results from the chemistry—atmosphere—climate model version of the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator (ACCESS) are presented. ACCESS is based on the UK Met Office Unified Model version 7.3 (UM 7.3) including the United Kingdom Chemistry and Aerosols (UKCA) module. The ACCESS model is set up with the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Modular Ocean Model (NOAA/GFDL MOM version 4p1) and the Los Alamos Laboratory Sea Ice Model (LANL CICE version 4.1) for forecast simulations. The land is simulated using the CSIRO land surface model (CABLE). Two Ref—C1 simulations are performed to evaluate the effect of the chemical kinetic rate updates due to JPL 2011 revisions — with key C10 and BrO reactions affected. A Ref—C2 simulation will be performed for CCMI using ACCESS 1.3 RCP 6.0 sea surface temperatures and sea—ice data. Climatologies of model ozone simulations are compared to observations from ozonesondes and satellites for the Southern Hemisphere. Observations of vertical pro?les of ozone made at Melbourne, Macquarie Island and Davis, Antarctica are compared to ACCESS, providing a large latitudinal cross—section comparison of ozone pro?les for the southern hemisphere. Changes in total ozone in Southern Hemisphere middle and high latitudes between the 1980s and 2000s are also compared between the model simulations and observations.
