Project information
Project aim
Sustained, coordinated, and long-term observations of essential climate and ocean variables in the Southern Ocean at the appropriate temporal and spatial scales are critical to improve our understanding of the role of the Southern Ocean in the broader Earth system, and to detect and quantify the nature and impacts of change and variability therein. The overarching goal of this project is to maximise the scientific potential from RSV Nuyina by using the ship as a monitoring platform to provide multidisciplinary observations of essential climate and ocean variables during its underway travel from Australian ports to and from the Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic stations. These observations underpin all aspects of Antarctic and Southern Ocean research, modelling and forecasting, and are key to support protection, conservation and management of Southern Ocean ecosystems.
